Jordan, a 12-year-old male, is morbidly obese and has difficult to control type 2 diabetes. Dr. Bee, Jordan’s family physician, tries to facilitate his enrollment in a weight management program to provide him with lifestyle tools. He also attempts to refer Jordan to a paediatric endocrinologist to better control his diabetes. Repeated attempts to discuss Jordan’s health with his mother are unproductive. Jordan’s mother is adamant that she won’t support her son’s participation in the weight management program because “ we all have weight issues”. She refuses to have Jordan attend to the program or the clinic. Dr. Bee and his team are concerned about Jordan’s physical and mental health, as well as his social well being.
